The Show:
It's all been happening up at The Big Hoose! Local Laird Sir Coupar Angus and his talented wife Annie (the famous singer) have an announcement - they're the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl, Aurora (born on the night the Northern Lights danced across the sky). Everyone is delighted and excited... well, almost everyone. Annie's banished sister Malania The Mirthless (a dabbler in the Dark Arts) is furious at the news, and curses her sister's family from afar.
A year later at The Wee Hoose, Dame Livvie McSkivvie is busy preparing for Aurora's 1st birthday party with her dutiful son Murray, a child prodigy chef (pies a speciality!), but on arrival at The Big Hoose, they are met with some tragic news - Aurora's mum has mysteriously disappeared! Malania has (not so mysteriously) appeared, offering to marry Sir Coupar and bring up Aurora as her own daughter - an offer that is flatly refused! Malania is raging, and curses Aurora, warning them that should she prick her finger on a spinning wheel (how random is that?!) before she turns 21, she will spend the rest of her life in a Deep Sleep, and her life will amount to nothing.....BOO!!!
Livvie McSkivvie is beside herself with fear and anxiety and makes haste to The Medium Hoose to seek advice from local psychic Claire Voyant (obviously), who tells her she must shelter Aurora at The Wee Hoose, disguise her identity til she's 21, and the curse will be broken.
And so it comes to pass that Aurora becomes Rory, Murray's wee brother and best pal, and a life of fun and adventure unfolds (and lots of music in "Rory's" case), at least until the eve of Aurora's 21st birthday...
The Roles:
SIR COUPAR ANGUS (male presenting, late 30s to 50s)
A warm, lovable, doting father to Aurora and devoted husband to Lady Annie. A good man who also happens to be the Laird of The Big Hoose, though that title means very little to him if he cannot share it with the people he loves. Strong acting and comedy chops are required, with singing and movement skills a definite bonus.
LADY ANNIE ANGUS (female presenting, 30s to 50s)
The devoted wife of Sir Coupar and loving mother to Aurora. A celebrated singer-songwriter and an absolute powerhouse of positive energy. While that spark is dimmed by evil influences, it is never fully extinguished, and she hopes her daughter will inherit it too. Strong singing skills are essential, along with confident movement and dance ability.
AURORA / RORY (female presenting, 20s…ish)
A singer/songwriter/DJ(!) who, to save her from an evil curse, now lives in disguise as her alter ego, “Rory B”, at The Wee Hoose with Dame Livvie McSkivvie and her son, Murray. Like her mother, she is a force for good. A bit impetuous at times, but seemingly fearless in the face of danger. Strong singing and movement/dance skills are essential, as is the ability to flip effortlessly and impressively between Aurora and “Rory”, both vocally and physically.
CLAIRE BOUYANT (female presenting, 20s to 30s)
A psychic medium who is frequently called upon (mostly by Livvie McSkivvie!) in times of uncertainty to offer sage advice. She is chaotic, skittish, and constantly surprised by events, which is fairly strange for someone who can see into the future, don’t you think?
Please note: the actor playing this role will also be ENSEMBLE and UNDERSTUDY for Lady Annie, Aurora, and Malania the Mirthless. Strong singing and movement/dance skills are essential.
HAMISH, SON OF MALANIA (male presenting, 20s to 30s)
The not-remotely-evil son of Malania, who thankfully hasn't inherited any of his mother’s sinister tendencies. A nature-loving, litter-picking pillar of the community who really does not want to be doing his mother’s dirty work. He just wants to do some good and maybe make a pal along the way.
Please note: the actor playing this role will also be ENSEMBLE and UNDERSTUDY for Sir Coupar and Murray McSkivvie. Strong singing and movement/dance skills are essential.
MALANIA THE MIRTHLESS (female presenting, 30s to 50s)
The banished sister of Lady Annie. A dabbler in the Dark Arts, driven by jealousy, hatred, and revenge. Bitter. Twisted. Not very nice, really. A flair for drama, dark humour, and strong comedy chops are required, alongside confident singing and movement skills.
The suggested playing ages listed are what we envisage but we have some flexibility. We encourage actors of any gender, including non-binary performers, to submit for any role which they would be comfortable playing.
All contracting will be managed by Perth Theatre, under Equity guidelines.
Submissions should be sent to: casting@perththeatreandconcerthall.com with the subject heading ‘Sleeping Beauty Casting Submission 2026’.
Deadline for submissions: Monday 25 May at 18:00.
Auditions will take place in Perth on Tuesday 16, Wednesday 17 & Thursday 18 June 2026
