Approaching, Developing and Creating Showreel Material
Daryl Cockburn & Lisa Nicoll
We know how important it is to make yourself visible as a creative whether that be an actor, writer or director. Often it can be frustrating when you may not have work available for people to see and for others to experience the talents that you may have for work or collaboration.
Showreels are a great way to do this but sometimes material that a creative has may be out of date or not available.
This is a practical session with Lisa Nicoll and filmmaker Daryl Cockburn to look at how this can start to be achieved. Time will be taken to look at the best material for scenes. How & where these could be shot and time for direction for camera. This workshop will be the foundation for filming showreels at the Creative Hub and having material later in the year.
Daryl is a freelance filmmaker based in Glasgow for over 17 years. In that time, he has had the pleasure in working with many fantastic companies and projects. For 15 years he has worked freelance with the National Theatre of Scotland as a filmmaker and editor, as well as working regularly with other theatre companies such as Vanishing Point, Barrowland Ballet, Tortoise in a Nutshell, 21 Common, Theatre Gu Leòr, Raw Material, In Motion, Loop Theatre, Lisa Nicoll Productions and Surrogate Productions to name a few, creating trailers, social media clips, archiving performances, rehearsal trailers, vox pops and other promotional material.
He also worked with the Tron theatre as the filmmaker and editor on a film tribute to the poet Edwin Morgan called High Man Pen Meander which was awarded five-star reviews in the Guardian and Scotsman.
He has directed and shot music videos, films and corporate videos, live events as well as documentaries. He has most recently shot music videos for both A New International and The Strange Blue Dreams, and also worked as a visual artist with award-winning, German documentary theatre specialists Rimini Protokoll for Dos' and Don’ts. His short film SOCKS, which he wrote and directed, has just finished its festival run where it was screened around the UK, Europe, Asia and America, winning awards including 3 Best Film awards, 9 Best Comedy Awards and 7 Best Director awards as well as 8 other awards for Acting, Costume and Cinematography.
