Writing 13-18yrs with Rowan - PYT 60

If you want to write but you’re scared of getting it wrong, then it might be time to do away with ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ and look at playwriting in a different light. In this workshop, we’ll take an approach to writing text for performance that prioritises discovery and experimentation, building scenes around the unique conditions of live theatre.

The supposed ‘rules’ around playwriting can seem mysterious and have us second-guessing ourselves before we have even committed a word to paper – three-act structure! character objectives! realistic dialogue! – but what are the real rules of playwriting? Over the course of this session we will desperately try to find some, as we will look practically at the ‘limitations’ that theatre might place on our writing and how these restrictions can open doors for more creative storytelling.

Rowan (they/them) is a writer, actor, improviser, and part-time clown with over 12 years of experience in workshop delivery across drama, improv, science and health education. An Acting and Performance graduate of Dundee & Angus College, they have also trained with Jordan & Skinner, The Acting Lab, and Robyn Hambrook of the Bristol Clown School. Rowan collaborates with individual artists, theatre companies and young people to develop new writing and performance. Their first play, WRAPPERS, is currently in development and was longlisted for 2024's David MacLennan Award (A Play, a Pie, and a Pint). Rowan is inspired by science-fiction and horror, and their practice values play, curiosity, and experimentation.
